Many times when we are dancing, we forget the importance of the various muscle groups we use. With practice, we can learn more about our own bodies, and which muscle groupings to use. But more importantly, how to use them properly.
Almost every time I am instructing a class, I notice at least one person, and in most cases many people, straightening their arms. This can cause anything from an uncomfortable dance, to a dislocated shoulder! What can we do to prevent this? Engage those Lats! Our back muscles are not only strong and can help prevent us from injury, but if we use them properly, we will have a more connected, easier, and in the end, a more fun dance .
Engaging the lats properly will keep your elbows more bent and natural resulting in a more effective lead and follow.
If you tighten your muscles properly, and without strain, it’g going to feel as if you are pulling your shoulder blades together and pushing your chest out. Remember to stay comfortable and don’t hurt yourself. (use this tip at your own risk)
